Country Background

Sri Lanka is an island in the continent of Asia, off the tip of India, which is hailed for its natural beauty. It became independent from the UK in 1948 after nearly 150 years of British rule.

There were years of ethnic tensions arising from violence and civil war which began in 1983 and didn’t end until 2009 with the defeat of the ‘Tamil Tigers’ killing an estimated 75,000 people. The 2004 Asian Tsunami also killed over 35,000 people in Sri Lanka.

AidCamps has led projects in Sri Lanka since 2004, and our local partner, SERVE, has helped us target our resources to help underprivileged and deprived children through their social work remit. You can find out more about SERVE on Our Partners page.

Our Projects in Sri Lanka

We have worked with SERVE on a number of children’s resource centre projects, including the creation of a resource centre providing a child-friendly environment for the children of the rural community in Uda Walawe, giving them facilities for additional studies to do their homework, use the library and play indoor games such as chess and carom.

We have also been joined on projects in Sri Lanka by volunteers from a UK school, who helped to complete a four-storey ‘home away from home’ centre.

Lunawa Resource Centre, Sri Lanka

July 2018

Doubling the size of the resource centre

Volunteers worked to double in size a small resource centre in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, which had previously been refurbished with a grant from AidCamps in 2017. The centre provides much-needed support to local children and their parents, and delivers a range of classes to the children as well as providing support to women’s self-help groups.

"We organised a sports session and relay games for the children, which they loved. The sack race proved the most popular. "

Ethiopia is a beautiful country, most of it high on a plateau. We spent the middle weekend in the Simien Mountains which really helped us appreciate the rugged terrain.

We stepped out into the sunny Nepal afternoon and so began the most amazing emotional journey I had ever been on. 3 weeks that would change my perspective on life!

You need to be reasonably fit and if you like to meet people on your travels (and do something that is so worthwhile) then give it a go! If I can do it, then so can most others. You won't regret it.
