Ethiopia
Country Background
Ethiopia is Africa’s oldest independent country and has the second largest population – over 102 million people. Life expectancy is 63 years for men and 67 for women.
Ethiopia is the home of the coffee bean. The majority of the population is Christian, and a third Muslim. There are 80 languages spoken.
AidCamps has worked in Ethiopia since 2016, when our volunteers built two classrooms replacing dilapidated ones. We work in partnership with the NGO, Together We Learn (previously Link Ethiopia). You can find out more about Together We Learn on Our Partners page.
Our Projects in Ethiopia
Our first project in Ethiopia built two classrooms at a rural primary school, Andinet School, with volunteers also raising funds to provide furniture and establish a handwashing programme for the children attending the school. We returned to the school in 2018 to build additional classrooms which would enable children to stay at school for another year instead of leaving after Grade 4.
Our most recent project in 2019 was a private two-week school building project in Defecha, a small village close to Gondar in Northern Ethiopia, when a group of 11 people came together to commemorate the life of a very special family member.

Construction of two-room school block
A private two-week school building project in Defecha, a small village close to Gondar in Northern Ethiopia, where a group of 11 volunteers came together to commemorate the life of a very special family member. They raised enough money to construct a two-room school block to improve the overall provision at the school, as well as a two-room school block at another school in Shashkurit.
"We organised a sports session and relay games for the children, which they loved. The sack race proved the most popular. "

Ethiopia is a beautiful country, most of it high on a plateau. We spent the middle weekend in the Simien Mountains which really helped us appreciate the rugged terrain.

We stepped out into the sunny Nepal afternoon and so began the most amazing emotional journey I had ever been on. 3 weeks that would change my perspective on life!

You need to be reasonably fit and if you like to meet people on your travels (and do something that is so worthwhile) then give it a go! If I can do it, then so can most others. You won't regret it.
